About the Museum

Mission

The Silver City Museum inspires people to explore the diverse history and culture of southwestern New Mexico.

History

The museum opened in 1967 as a department of the Town of Silver City.  It offers exhibitions, and public programs for all ages, community-wide events, publications and a gift store offering regional crafts, local history books and southern New Mexico souvenir items, and it cares for a vast collection of historical objects.  

It has gained national recognition for its high standards of operation by being accredited by the American Alliance of Museums. One of only seven museum in all of New Mexico to receive this honor.

Operations

The Museum is a public organization operated by of the Town of Silver City. It is also supported by its non-profit friends group the Silver City Museum Society which provides valuable funding to expand the reach of the museum’s programs and services. The Museum is also guided by a special Mayor’s Advisory Group composed of area citizens.
