Education
It is the Silver City Museum's philosophy to share balanced, accurate information on the history of southwest New Mexico through interpretive programs for all age groups, to make historical resources available to the general public, to promote the teaching of regional history, to encourage research, and to publish research findings. Our educational offerings are often tied to current exhibit themes, but may also be used to explore aspects of regional history that lack treatment in exhibits, or for which there are few surviving artifacts, such as Apache culture or the Mexican period of our regional history.
We offer:
- Guided group tours of the Silver City Museum (requires plenty of advance notice)
- Step-on guides for bus tours of Silver City historic neighborhoods (requires plenty of advance notice)
- Pocket guides to three historic Silver City neighborhoods, La Capilla, Gospel Hill, and the Historic Business District
(50 cents each in the Museum Store)
- Speakers can be arranged for organizations and classes within the region, upon request
- Classroom outreach programs, which include trunks and curricula on ranching and pottery of the ancient Mimbres culture, can be presented by a Museum representative or can be checked out for teacher use
- Curriculum and hands-on kit on the Chiricahua Apaches, designed for teacher checkout and classroom use over a two week period. The classroom presentation on the Mexican Period of New Mexico history is illustrated with a Josefina doll and accessories
